Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing

The University of Iowa

The Department of English at the University of Iowa invites applications for an Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing. We seek a dynamic fiction writer and teacher, who can contribute to our hybrid major by offering both creative and critical classes. We particularly welcome applications from writers who have expertise in multiple creative genres or in the following fields: African American Studies, Asian Literature, Native American and Indigenous Studies, Gender, Women's, and Sexuality Studies, Transnational and Postcolonial Literature, Latin American Literature, Disability Studies, and Media Studies. This is a tenure-track position. Teaching will be at the undergraduate and the graduate levels, with a normal load of two courses per semester. The anticipated start date for the position will be August 21, 2024.

The English and Creative Writing Major flourishes at a top-ranked writing university, home to several premiere writing programs. Located in Iowa City, one of America's two UNESCO cities of literature, our ECW program affords students and faculty unique opportunities to participate in the community's diverse and vibrant literary culture, with campus-wide collaborations across the university's MFA programs in creative writing, translation, Spanish, and nonfiction, The Center for the Book, and International Writing Program. Our department promotes a creative, rigorous, and inclusive fusion of creative writing and critical scholarship.

Education Requirement:

MFA in Creative Writing and/or PhD degree in English, Comparative Literature, Creative Writing, or related field in hand by the position start date, or equivalent professional experience;
Required Qualifications:
  • evidence of expertise in creative writing and contemporary literature;
  • evidence of effective teaching at the university level;
  • a strong record of publication with a book of fiction in print or under contract.
  • Demonstrated experience promoting an inclusive and equitable learning environment.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • experience in program administration or departmental leadership;
  • publication or prospective publication of additional books or equivalent literary production.
