Position Highlights The Deaf Studies program has a Career Track (Non-tenure Eligible) Assistant or Associate Professor of Practice for ASL-English interpreting. Join a collaborative team in a dynamic program committed to supporting the needs of students preparing for careers as interpreters in K12 and other settings.



The successful candidate will teach two to four courses each semester and/or facilitate field experiences onsite in Tucson, Arizona (80%) and perform service (20%); provide feedback and advise students; participate in outreach, program initiatives, screening/selection of students; engage with department, college, and university communities; demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and service.



We seek an individual who can use American Sign Language (ASL) and written/spoken English as instructional languages, has the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, is able to guide students in the learning process toward the achievement of ASL-English interpreting proficiency experience with technology, and able to modify curriculum for online or in-person teaching.



This is a 9-month (academic) teaching position (1.0 FTE) at the Assistant or Associate rank. The position requires teaching in-person courses in the fall and spring semesters. This position is not tenure eligible. The anticipated start date is January 2024.

Duties & Responsibilities


  • Teach beginning to advanced ASL-English interpreting classes and/or facilitate field placements

  • Foster a positive, equitable, and inclusive learning environment for students

  • Maintain regular office hours

  • Implement changes necessary to qualify for, or maintain, CCIE accreditation standards

  • Produce and contribute to documents related to teaching and learning within the program

  • Establish and maintain a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisor

  • Engage with program, departmental, college, and university communities for meetings and service

  • Engage with local and regional Deaf and interpreting communities for discipline-specific service activities

  • Support program recruitment efforts

  • Participate in faculty governance through service on departmental committees

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • A deep knowledge and understanding of the Deaf community

  • Expertise in course and curriculum development

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possess an earned doctorate degree in interpreting/translation, American Sign Language/linguistics, Deaf studies, Deaf education, education, or a closely related field upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with working effectively and collegially with a wide and culturally diverse range of students, staff, faculty, and community.

  • Minimum of three years of experience teaching ASL-English interpreting at the community college or university level.

  • ASLPI (level 4 or higher) OR SLPI:ASL (Advanced/Advanced Plus or higher rating).
