Title: Educational Sign Language interpreter
Reports To: Supervisor of Special Education
Takes Direction From: Director of Special Education; Supervisor of Special Education; Principal; Assistant Principal; Special Education Department Chair
Schedule/Calendar: 7.5 hours/day 37.5 hours/week 180 days/year

Summary: An educational interpreter works one on one with a student in the classroom and school building to assist in communication among students who are deaf or hard of hearing, their hearing peers, the classroom teacher, and other personnel in the school. An educational interpreter must effectively communicate classroom information between the teacher, the deaf student and other hearing students according to the language level of the student and the goals of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

Essential Functions:

Provides interpreting for pupils who are deaf or hard of hearing in all areas of the educational environment.

Provides academic support and/or note taking services for deaf or hard of hearing students.

Assists student in classroom discussion.

Participates as a student?s member of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) team at meetings and conferences. Provides insight and recommendations regarding communication in the development and review of progress on the IEP, including evaluations of student use of an interpreter.

Interprets IEP meetings when not participating as a team member.

Provides interpreting for conferences, telephone calls, assemblies, concerts, ceremonies, field trips or parent meetings when necessary. May provide interpreting for extra-curricular sports/activities beyond contract hours.

Prepares for daily lessons/school-related activities and preview media for interpreting.

Carries out individual behavior plan as designed by classroom teacher and/or IEP team.

Provides staff development opportunities on sign language interpretation as requested.

Maintains professional standards as delineated in the Code of Ethics of the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

Perform other duties assigned by supervisor(s) when this does not conflict with the primary responsibility of interpreting.

Education and/or Certification Required:

Associate degree

American Sign Language Interpreter certification

Experience Needed:

Experience with educational interpreting in a school setting

Knowledge:

Knowledge of deaf or hard of hearing culture.

Knowledge of special education practices.

Ability:

Ability to use American Sign Language.

Ability to provide oral interpreting.

Ability to collaborate with staff.

Ability to support a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion

Requisite Skills:

Strong command of ASL and English language.

Good interpersonal skills and communication skills.

Sedentary: involves sitting most of the time. Incumbent should be able to exert up to 10 lbs of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or move objects.
Light work: If the use of arm and/or leg control requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the individual sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work. The incumbent should be able to exert up to 20 lbs of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
Medium work: The incumbent should be able to exert up to 50 lbs of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs of force constantly to move objects.
Heavy work: The incumbent should be able to exert up to 100 lbs of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs of force constantly to move objects.
Very heavy work: The incumbent should be able to exert in excess of 100 lbs of force occasionally, and in excess of 50 lbs of force frequently, and in excess of 20 lbs of force constantly to move objects.
