Job description: The Department of Music at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), seeks applicants for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in the area of African American Vernacular Forms. The department seeks a Performer/Scholar whose work engages with the diversity of American culture from varied disciplinary perspectives that could include performance, performance practice, music history, sociology, ethnomusicology, and cultural studies.



Position Qualifications



A range of terminal degrees in Music will be considered, PhD or DMA. The terminal degree must be in hand at start of appointment.



The ideal candidate will be an innovative program builder who will employ inclusive pedagogies and forge relationships with on-campus and across-system culture bearers to create social platforms allowing music and other arts to be a form of safe and creative expression. The possibilities of the position are broad, but we are particularly interested in someone whose work is dedicated to the music of the African diaspora in American culture, including (but not limited to) Jazz, Blues, Gospel, Rhythm and Blues, Soul, Hip-Hop, and music of the Caribbean. We seek someone that can not only reveal the mechanics of these music but also engage with them as individual and collective expressions that carry social, racial, and political meanings.



Preference will be given to applicants who have evidence of a strong record of university or equivalent teaching excellence in areas such as Jazz Studies, History of Jazz, Direction of a Jazz Ensemble, History of Rhythm and Blues, Music & Civil Rights, and Fundamentals of Music. Anticipated courses include: ensemble leadership, Music & Social Justice, History of Jazz, and a First Year Seminar in a field related to current research/practice. Applicants must be able to add to and complement the work of current faculty, and their work should engage one or more of the following as related to music: performance studies, critical race theory, gender and sexuality studies, disability studies, indigenous studies, critical voice studies, and migration studies.



The successful candidate will be expected to adopt a teacher-performer-scholar model of professional engagement with a commitment to service and an established productive agenda of research and scholarship, or promise of the same. We value a diverse array of professional and practical experience in addition to the required academic qualifications.

A complete application portfolio requires: 1) letter of application; 2) a current curriculum vitae; 3) official undergraduate and graduate transcripts; 4) no more than two examples of representative scholarship (such as published article/s, key dissertation chapters, competitively selected conference papers, or manuscript submissions); 5) complete copies of original teaching evaluations (including qualitative comments) or other evaluations reflecting the most recent years of university-level or equivalent teaching; 6) a statement of teaching philosophy; 7) sample syllabi related to this position; 8) names and contact information of three references; and 9) if the candidate does not have a doctorate, evidence of timeline and anticipated completion. Candidates should be prepared to provide letters of recommendation upon request.
