Job title: Instructional Assistant-Math Company: Santa Monica College Job description : Description Merged Promotional & Open Competitive Instructional Assistant - Math WELCOME TO SANTA MONICA COLLEGE We are seeking dedicated individuals with a thorough understanding of college level mathematics and a passion for supporting students to join our team. The current vacancy is located in the Black Collegians/Latino Center and will focus on understanding the specific needs of African-American, Latino students and other groups experiencing equity gaps. This position is scheduled to work 40 hours per week, 11 months per year on the Santa Monica College main campus. Please note that all candidates must have authorization to work in the United States; the District does not have the ability to provide sponsorship. What You Will Bring to the College Our ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience working with Black/African American and/or Latino populations in higher education. They will have a thorough understanding of college level mathematics including algebra, trigonometry and calculus and the ability to apply tutoring practices to support students of different backgrounds with varying levels of subject proficiency in both in-person and online environments. Remote Work Program Santa Monica College has a remote work program option available for employees whose job duties do not require a physical presence on College property. The tentative schedule for this position provides for up to 2 days of remote work per week, with the remaining 3 days on campus. A new permanent classified employee may request a higher salary placement based on recruitment issues and/or additional training and experience which greatly exceeds the minimum requirements. Please note that salary placement above the third step requires additional approvals by Santa Monica College executive staff. Current Employees: Upon promotion, the new salary for a current, permanent employee is based on Merit Rule 12.2.7. In accordance with this rule, employees are entitled to at least a one-step (5%) salary increase, and may be eligible for advanced step placement in accordance with established criteria. About the Selection Process The selection process tentatively consists of a Written Test (pass/fail) and a Qualifications Appraisal Interview, which is worth 100% of the candidates' overall scores. Candidates must be successful on all test parts to be placed on the eligibility list. The eligibility list created from this recruitment will be used to fill any vacancies that occur during the one year life of the eligibility list, including full-time and/or part-time, permanent and/or temporary positions. Examples of Duties Assesses students' math skills and needs, and provides specialized individual tutoring to students Assists students with specific classroom assignments related to mathematical problem-solving, and comprehension of basic mathematics concepts Reinforces the terminology, concepts, and problem-solving techniques presented to students in the classroom Assists students with the use of computer based mathematical problem solving tools, and calculators Reviews students completed assignments to determine specific learning needs May assist instructors in assessing student progress Performs other related duties as requested or assigned Examples of essential duties are descriptive and not restrictive in nature and are generally listed in descending order of importance. Minimum Qualifications Education Requirement: Successful completion of eighteen (18) semester hours of college level coursework in mathematics, including algebra, trigonometry, and first-year calculus. Experience Requirement: One (1) year of experience tutoring students in Mathematics. Education/Experience Equivalency: Experience and/or education of the same kind, level or amount as required in the minimum qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
